Emergency Medical Technology (EMTS)

EMTS 1010 Emergency Medical Technician-Basic 8 Credits

Prerequisite: American Heart Association CPR.

This introductory course provides basic knowledge and skills used in the treatment and transport of the sick or injured until they reach the hospital. The course places emphasis on anatomy and physiology related to the EMT’s role in lifting and moving patients, trauma and medical patient management, and airway and cardiac management. Students will apply knowledge and skills in the EMS Learning Lab and clinical setting. Successful completion of this course qualifies students to take the National Registry Certification Exam for Basic EMT.

EMTS 1050 Emergency Medical Technician- Refresher 2 Credits

Prerequisite: Previous EMT certification.

This course provides a review of basic knowledge and skills used in the treatment and transport of the sick or injured until they reach the hospital. The course places emphasis on lifting and moving patients, trauma and medical patient management, and airway and cardiac management. The course also presents current methods of patient management and the use of new equipment. Successful completion of this course meets the requirements for renewal of certification as a Basic EMT.

EMTS 2111 Paramedic Beginner 6 Credits

Prerequisite: HLTH 1238 or both BIOL 2210 and BIOL 2220, High School Anatomy, or program director override, admission to the Paramedic program, current Ohio EMT certification, current American Heart Association: BLS Provider.

This introductory course establishes the foundation of paramedic-level practice, covering EMS systems, medical/legal principles, pharmacology, IV therapy, airway management, and patient assessment. Students begin developing the clinical decision-making skills and fundamental competencies necessary for more advanced care.

EMTS 2121 Paramedic Intermediate A 5 Credits

Prerequisite: EMTS 2111 or permission of instructor.

This course advances student knowledge in cardiac and respiratory emergencies. Emphasis is places on ECG interpretation, cardiovascular pharmacology, ACLS integration, and airway management in critical situations.

EMTS 2131 Paramedic Intermediate B 5 Credits

Prerequisite: EMTS 2121 or permission of instructor.

This course expands the paramedic student's knowledge of medical emergencies and patient assessment, focusing on complex conditions affecting the neurological, endocrine, immunologic, toxicologic, gastrointestinal, renal, psychiatric, and infectious systems. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, pharmacologic management, and integration of advanced assessment techniques. Students apply knowledge in lab simulations and supervised clinical environments to prepare for increasingly independent patient care roles.

EMTS 2141 Paramedic Advanced C 5 Credits

Prerequisite: EMTS 2131 or permission of instructor.

This course focuses on trauma and obstetric emergencies, emphasizing rapid assessment, critical thinking, and field stabilization techniques. Students explore trauma systems, injury patterns, and prehospital management strategies through interactive lab simulations and clinical rotations. Additional focus is placed on childbirth, neonatal care, and gynecological emergencies.

EMTS 2151 Paramedic Advanced D 5 Credits

Prerequisite: EMTS 2141 or permission of instructor.

This course addresses special populations, field operations, and mass-casualty incident (MCI) response. Students learn to adapt paramedic-level care to pediatric, geriatric, and special-needs patients, as well as integrate command structures and triage protocols into multi-patient scenarios. The course also prepares students for EMS response in hazardous, rural, and resource-limited environments.

EMTS 2161 Paramedic Capstone 2 Credits

Prerequisite: EMTS 2151 or permission of instructor.

This Capstone course is the culminating clinical experience for paramedic students. It is designed to provide supervised integration of all cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills acquired throughout the program. Students function in a team leader role during real-time patient care in high-acuity settings. Successful completion demonstrates entry-level paramedic readiness for certification and practice.
