Phlebotomy Certificate/Area of Specialization (3601)
Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood specimens through venipuncture and skin puncture procedures to support medical testing, transfusions, and blood donation. As vital members of the healthcare team, phlebotomists work closely with patients, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate specimen collection, proper patient identification, and compliance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
The Phlebotomy Certificate/Area of Specialization provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to safely and effectively collect blood specimens, maintain
quality standards, and support reliable laboratory results.
Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a Lakeland Certificate of Completion and are eligible to apply for a national certification examination.
A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a grade of “C” or higher in all science (HLTH) and program-specific courses are required for graduation. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grades may not be used to fulfill health program requirements.
All applicants must apply to Lakeland Community College and meet one of the following criteria:
Option 1: High School Students (College Credit Plus)
- Must be accepted to Lakeland Community College and meet all College Credit Plus admission requirements.
Option 2: Transfer Students or Current Lakeland Students
- Must declare the Phlebotomy Certificate or a Multi-Skilled Degree as a major and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for admission.
- Applicants must meet with the program director and an academic advisor to review program guidelines and policies.
NOTE: Students who complete the Medical Assisting Certificate/Area of Specialization will have also fulfilled the academic requirements for the Phlebotomy Certificate/Area of Specialization and are eligible to apply for the corresponding national certification examination.
