Early Childhood Education (9610)
The Early Childhood Education program provides students with a theoretical background in child development, professionalism, curriculum development, assessment practices, and hands-on real world teaching experience. Students’ field work in early childhood includes experiences in multicultural and inclusion classrooms and provides opportunities to work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.
The mission of the program is to prepare early childhood teachers with the knowledge, skills, and disposition necessary to provide developmentally appropriate care and education for young children. Educational experiences prepare students to work in a variety of settings including child care centers, preschools, prekindergarten classrooms, and Head Start programs. The program also provides students with the skills to work as a family child care provider as well as work with children with special needs.
The Early Childhood Education program is approved by the Ohio Department of Education for Prekindergarten Associate Teacher Licensure and nationally accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation. There are two options in which students may proceed: (1) the Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education; and (2) the degree and prekindergarten licensure.
The requirements for teacher licensure include passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills Exams - CORE Reading (passing score - 168); CORE Writing (passing score - 165); and CORE Math (passing score - 162). Upon successful completion of the Praxis Core, student must pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators Exam – Prekindergarten (Subtest I & Subtest II). The Ohio Department of Education determines the passing scores on these exams, which is subject to change. Only eligible students who have been notified in writing that they have met all program requirements should take these exams. Please contact the department if you have questions.
Lakeland’s Teaching Learning Center/Campus Kids, a fully licensed, nationally accredited program by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and 5 Star Step Up to Quality Program serves children 16 months through five years of age. This laboratory school serves the Early Childhood Education program by engaging students in more than 100 hours of field experience onsite in the state-of-the-art child care facility.
Legislative mandates govern specialized admission requirements and performance objectives for the program. These include state laws requiring any person obtaining or maintaining a teaching license to be and remain a person of good moral character.
Lakeland Community College complies with the State of Ohio Background Check Requirements – Changes Effective 09/29/2019 5101:2-12 and 5101:2-13 of the Ohio Administrative Code. Students enrolling in Early Childhood Education coursework with less than 10 hours of fieldwork may not need to complete the background check. However, any student planning to complete the program and earn an Associate of Applied Studies Degree for Early Childhood Education must meet all State requirements prior to enrollment in EDUC 2180 Practicum in the Educational Setting. Therefore, it is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the current State Background Check Requirements for Child Care found at Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services website to determine whether or not they comply and will be eligible to complete the degree coursework requirements.
Please note that during this process, students will be required to submit fingerprints and participate in a BCI Background Check. If a conviction is deemed prohibitive, student will not be able to obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education or obtain state licensure. Specific math requirements are unique to the program and foster preparation for licensure exams. Therefore, it is essential for students to see a counselor annually and subsequently may contact the Early Childhood Education Department with questions regarding these requirements. Students will meet the requirement by successfully passing MATH 0950 Intermediate Algebra or testing into MATH 1650 College Algebra. In addition, it is recommended that students take MATH 1600 Survey of College Mathematics.

English course selection is based on placement test results (ENGL 1111 English Composition I (B) is 4 credits, only 3 credits apply to the degree).
Students who take a Mathematics course with more than 3 credits as part of the program requirements can apply the additional credit(s) to the general elective credits.
It is recommended that all core ECED/EDUC courses be completed prior to taking ECED 2800 Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar.
